Abstract
Drilling industry challenged with several problems to provide more hydrocarbon for increasing demands. Years of exploitation from hydrocarbon producing reservoirs or deep water explorations produce different challenges for drilling wells. Additionally unstable oil market forced the drilling process to be designed and implemented cheaper than before. Casing While Drilling (CWD) approach is one of the foremost techniques can make it tangible to drill a well in troublesome zones. Unique characteristics and mechanisms which is viable in this technique, prepares this method a problem-solving approach to drill in highly instable wellbores or heavy fluid loss zones. CWD provides drilling possibilities in most challenging situations and additionally eliminates many non-productive times. All of the benefits makes this technique an advantageous method which also reduces total project costs.
In this work two parts have been presented. The first section comes with main mechanism which provides several advantages for CWD which is known as smearing or plastering effect. Dealing with successful casing drilling applications in several fields in the world, second part prepares a very quick review on successful field trials and challenges which conventional drilling could not tackle the problem. Changing drilling plan to CWD approach provides several technical and economic advantages.
