Abstract

Summary

Methods have been proposed for quantitatively characterizing the brittleness of rock. Three types of methods are used to calculate the brittleness indexes of rocks which are collected from Qingshankou Formation of Daqing oil field, Northwest China. The 22 samples are firstly tested in the laboratory and the acquired data are analyzed to estimate the brittleness indexes. The three types of methods regard the mineral components, elastic parameters and characteristics parameters of the fracturing stress-strain curve respectively. Generally, the brittleness index decreases with the increase of rock porosity, and the three types of methods give significantly different estimation results. Results show that the formula proposed as the ratio of the Young’ s modulus and the Poisson’ s ratio gives the best correlation coefficients for the estimated brittleness index and porosity.
