Abstract
In our experiments, we investigated the effect of partial saturation on the characteristic frequency and attenuation peaks for a tight sandstone by using the stress-strain method at CNPC rock physics lab. The Young’s moduli and attenuation of the tight sandstone, measured independently, were verified consistent and reliable by Kramers-Kronig approach. We studied the variation of the P-wave velocity with frequency at different saturations and measured the peak attenuation frequency which aimed at obtaining the characteristic frequency. In the meantime, we normalized the velocity dispersion with respect to the velocity at 2 Hz as the saturation increase from 0% to 100% to analyse the characteristic frequency-saturation relationship. Based on these observations and analysis, we can conclude that the two-attenuation peaks are perhaps caused by two different mechanisms.
