Abstract

Summary

In this study, specimens collected from the site of sandy soil were used for indoor soil lab test to measure their physical properties. By applying the empirical formula capable of calculating the volumetric water content from the dielectric constant and the other empirical formula capable of calculating the dielectric constant based on the values of basic physical properties of specimens, their compatibilities were examined. By exploiting the numerical modelling technique, several ways to derive the dielectric constant of underground medium through GPR prospecting were reviewed and compared. The derivation of volumetric water content and dielectric constant through indoor soil lab test and the method of GPR prospecting is illustrated in Figure 1 .

Thereby, the characteristics of ground behaviour corresponding to different capillary suction forces in the course of ground excavation were analysed through numerical analysis of ground. In addition, the correlation between volumetric water content and capillary suction in an unsaturated soil was examined.
