Abstract

Summary

This work presents two different approaches for modelling one of the crustal extensional mechanisms observed in the formation of conjugated margins in rift basins. The first approach is a kinematic algorithm based on a fault rotation mechanism. A sequence of Iberia-New Foundland rift formation using the proposed kinematic algorithm is presented. The second one is a dynamic analysis for simulating the crustal extension in lithospheric scale. The dynamic modelling uses a Finite Element Method (FEM) code, in which an active fault is explicitly added. The fault rotation and the upward of the lower crust occurs naturally, induced by the imposed crustal extension. The dynamic modelling also localizes new faults based on shear and plastic zones. Finally, this work presents some conclusions about the similarities and differences between both approaches, showing the importance of each method as complementary tools.
