Abstract
In this study we use Controlled Source Electromagnetic (CSEM) data, well log data and rock physics to investigate electrical anisotropy drivers in the Barents Sea. The bulk background electrical anisotropy in major stratigraphic units around wells was directly estimated from CSEM data using a structurally constrained 1D inversion approach. The corresponding well log data was averaged in each formation to give a single value to allow direct comparison with the CSEM results. Analysis of the results show that anisotropy increases as porosity decreases and as the maximum burial depth increases. This indicates that the micro-structure is changing with burial and can be simulated using a rock physics model where pore aspect ratio changes as a function of porosity or depth. Increasing clay content has only a small effect on the anisotropy of the sediments.
