Abstract

Summary

The dynamic modulus was calculated using in-situ well logging data and ultrasonic measurements with conventional pulse transmission techniquewhile the static test carried out in a triaxial cell in laboratory simulating the reservoir conditions. This paper investigates the relationship between static and dynamic bulk modulus based on the measurements on some core samples from an Iranian oil field. In this research, 13 core plugs from a shale and carbonate reservoir (Sarvak and Ilam formations) were provided. Dynamic modulus is calculated using two methods: well logs data (f=10ߝ20 kHz) and ultrasonic measurements (f ∼500 ∼ 1000 kHz). In order to carry out static tests on the samples, a Multi-stage triaxial compression was performed on vertical plugs extracted from conventional cores taken at selected depth. Our results show that static and dynamic bulk modulus follow the same trend but show different values (dynamic is higher). Furthermore, some empirical relationships relating static and dynamic bulk modulus for this field were developed. The proposed relationships are derived for different saturation and pressure states. The relationships given in this study can be used to convert dynamic modulus into static ones which normally are more useful for reservoir studies.
