Abstract

Summary

Time-lapse or 4D-seismic refers to the repetition of a seismic survey after a period of time, time being the ‘fourth dimension’ in an effort to image changes that could have occurred in a reservoir (Tran, et al., 2003). The time-lapse method is useful in that reservoir changes between wells can be detected. It can also be used to improve production, by identifying areas of bypassed oil.

The seismic response of a reservoir may change due to changes in pressure, fluid saturation and temperature (Landro et.al., 1999). The changes in seismic images due to a variation in saturation and pressure can be used as additional observation data. Time-lapse seismic data are dynamical measurements which have a high resolution in the horizontal direction, and give a significant image of fluid and pressure changes for the entire reservoir.
