Abstract

Summary

Hydrocarbon exploration in Semliki basin has been done since 1925 but, inspite of the considerable exploration and drilling activities that have been carried out, no commercial discoveries have been made. However, oil and gas shows in the Turaco wells significantly demonstrate the presence of an effective petroleum system.

Therefore, as the main objective of this study, a 2D basin model of the Turaco area in the Semliki basin, Western Uganda was generated for the purpose of understanding the constraints to the petroleum potential of the basin.

Seismic interpretation was performed using 3D seismic data combined with well data and literature information using Petrel software version 2014 to understand the structural setting of the Semliki basin. PetroMod software version 2015 was used for 2D petroleum system modelling by integrating geophysical, geochemical and geological data in order to understand the petroleum system of the study area. The available measured data (temperature and vitrinite reflectance) from Turaco-2 well were used in basin model calibrations.
