Abstract

Summary

Experience has shown that the widest possible bandwidth MT data is the most useful in the general case. In the past, this was difficult and/or costly because separate systems had to be deployed. Recently, the combination of AMT and MT became known as BMT (broadband MT) ca. 10 kHz – 2000 sec. But, even greater bandwidth is useful and advantageous, so Phoenix Geophysics has developed a new ultra-wideband MT system called UMT. This new system uses a single magnetic sensor model MTC-150 and multichannel, low-power recording unit (MTU-8A family) to capture simultaneously the entire spectrum from 10 kHz to approx. 50,000 seconds. A powerful and flexible new software package called EMPower – coded, advanced and maintained by a team by professional software engineers-- is also provided.

The new system provides a number of advantages including, but not limited to: larger memory; lower power; simplified, faster processing and calibration; avoidance of mismatch due to different calibrations and use of different sensors; optimal capture of AMT deadband data without interrupting simultaneous acquisition of long-period time series; and improved inversions. As well, it provides significant cost savings, both capital cost (CAPEX) and operating cost (OPEX).
