Abstract
In this study, the characteristics of seismic noise in the Northern Aegean region, Western Turkey are investigated by using eleven broadband velocity sensors operated by Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) of Bosphorus University and Earthquake Research Department (ERD) of Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey. The probability density functions and power spectral densities are calculated to observe the spatial and temporal variations of noise. The noise levels are mapped for the cultural noise (0.1–1s), short period – Double Frequency Peak (DFP) (0.5–3s), DFP (4–8s), and Single Frequency Peak (10–20s) period bands and compared with the previously obtained results of Southern Marmara and Adana regions. Also low and high mode noise models are obtained for the region, and compared with Southern Marmara, Adana basin, Greece and Ireland mode noise models. We observe that our results are coherent with the low and high noise models of the Earth. The results of this study can provide useful information before the installation of prospective stations.
