Abstract

Summary

In this paper, we cast the Multiple-Point Statistics (MPS) simulation as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). We introduce Efficient Backtracking (EBT) algorithm to solve this CSP. The EBT consists of the generalised are consistency (GAC), and conflict-directed backjumping algorithms, which we discuss in further details. The results of some applications of the method to simulate MPS properties of some synthetic training images with two and four facies are presented. The results show that no inconsistency such as discontinuous channels in a channel setting occurred in any of realisations generated by the EBT as opposed to previously published methods. Moreover, the results show that the presence of consistent hard data does not degrade the quality of simulation results. The presented method provides a robust mathematical framework for performing MPS simulation.
