Abstract

Summary

Mud invasion would change the formation resistivity and affect the accuracy of logging interpretation. To study the microscopic mechanism of mud invasion, a three-dimensional digital rock of sandstone was constructed. The digital rock was divided into five equal segments, each of which had a different pore structure. As the saturation of mud filtrate within pores increased, the change in resistivity of each segment was observed and recorded. The results showed that the mud invasion was controlled by the micro-pore structure of the rock. In other words, the better the pore structures of every segment are, the easier the mud invasion would be. When encountering a rock segment having a poor pore structure, the mud filtrate can continue to invade in when the pressure difference is large enough. The rock segment with the poorest pore structure has the bottleneck effect on mud invasion.
