Abstract
This year marks the 15th anniversary of reservoir monitoring with the Valhall LoFS (Life of Field Seismic) program. To mark this milestone, we will review the history of seismic monitoring at Valhall, the evolution in data quality improvement, and recent examples showing the use of 4D data for drilling and development decisions. The Valhall operator acquired the first 3D streamer seismic over the field in 1992, acquired repeat streamer seismic for 4D in 2002, installed the LoFS 4-component permanent array in 2003, and has since acquired 20 surveys for seismic surveillance. The program provides significant benefits by informing the planning of wells and interventions, and for use in refining and calibrating of the reservoir model. During this time, velocity model-building techniques utilizing wide-azimuth OBS data were improved and married with depth imaging to improve the quality of both 4D and PS data significantly. Recent benefits of the data include an improved definition of reservoir thicknesses, to inform the Valhall JV sanctioning of a 12-slot NUI over the field’s West Flank. Other recent uses include integration of 4D PP data, static PS data, and injection and production history for integrated interpretations to optimize well planning where PP imaging is very challenged.
