Abstract

Summary

This paper demonstrates how the reflection seismic method (mainly 3D seismics) has been used to explore for deep mineral deposits (mainly gold- bearing conglomerates) and map the gross structural architecture that control the formation of these deposits, focusing on the case studies from the Witwatersrand Basin. We further discuss the pitfalls with conventional 3D seismic surveys compared to broadband 3D seismic surveys for mapping both shallow (< 500 m) and deep targets (> 500 m) in hard rock environments. We argue that for future deep exploration programme to be successful 3D broadband seismic surveys will need to be considered.
