Abstract

Summary

At present 16 geothermal systems are operational in the Netherlands, producing 2.6 PJ of heat every year. Nearly all of the currently produced heat in these geothermal systems is used to heat greenhouses. The total energy consumption of all greenhouses in The Netherlands was 98 PJ in 2016. The proportion of sustainable energy in terms of total energy consumption in greenhouses increased from 4.8% to 5.5% in 2016, largely due to the increase in geothermal applications. This increasing trend will persist in 2018. In the coming years a set of geothermal systems will be realised in Luttelgeest in the Dutch province of Flevoland to provide heat for greenhouses. Geothermal experts from IF Technology have completed extensive research into the geological and reservoir engineering parameters in order to design multiple geothermal systems around Luttelgeest. Seismic data was interpreted to derive the depth of the geothermal reservoir; the Slochteren Formation. Petrophysical analysis of 9 wells was performed to determine the reservoir properties. Special attention was paid to the probability of reservoir compartmentalization and seismic hazards. Based on the study results a geothermal system was designed. This system will add approximately 1 PJ of renewable energy to the Dutch yearly geothermal energy production.
