Abstract

Summary

2D seismic interpretation is generally complex, relying on 2D auto-tracking and manual picking of major stratigraphic events. Interpreters must extend this process to multiple lines, presenting various resolutions, amplitude ranges and mistie effects. Hence, it is often cumbersome to outline the main stratigraphic geometries from 2D interpretation before interpreting 3D seismic. To improve this process, we propose a novel method to generate Relative Geological Time (RGT) models from 2D seismic data. From a seismic line, a 2D horizon patch grid is computed based on seismic polarities and links are automatically established between the patches via a minimization process. The RGT values are first assigned to the horizons marked by the interpreter. The intermediate values are then calculated on the remaining patches using a thickness optimisation method. This technique allows producing a consistent 2D RGT model honouring the stratigraphic discontinuities. Applied to a multiple line set, our method allows compensating the misties at the seismic lines intersections based on the connection between the marked horizons. The combination of the 2D RGT models obtained for each line eventually allows interpolating a 3D RGT model, thus permitting a comprehensive understanding of the stratigraphic geometries at an early stage of the exploration workflow.
