Abstract

Summary

In underground mining the geological conditions ahead of the actual excavation are always of interest in order to optimize the mining progress and the safety precautions. This applies especially to salt mines, created in salt dome structures. The exact shape of the salt dome is an important information to keep a minimum distance of the mining area from the border of the dome.

In order to image the internal structures and the boundaries of salt domes in underground mines seismic techniques have been applied, using 2-component geophone probes, to perform data processing on the basis of P- and S-waves. Due to the geometrical situation in the underground mining areas, for this environment typical seismic data were recorded, data processing steps were adjusted and interpretation of the results needed to be performed, while recognizing the 3-dimensional situation of the underground.
