While Full Waveform Inversion is seen primarily as a tool for velocity model building, the potential exists to invert for multiple parameters. We examine the simplified case of isotropic visco-acoustic FWI for velocity, density and attenuation. Even for acoustics, the issue of wave equation reciprocity, the implication of the divergence operator in the definition of pressure, the question of parameter resolution and the potential of using vector data are important considerations. It is our intent to study visco-acoustic 2D FWI i) visco-acoustic synthetic data, ii) using 2D elastic data, and iii) using 3D elastic data.
