Abstract

Summary

Monitoring is the essential part of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects to ensure safe containment of the injected CO2. 3D time-lapse borehole seismic technology offers a reliable way of detecting the plume. The method provides the high signal to noise data due to the stable sensors’ conditions in a well, acquisition takes relatively short time and less affected by land access issues. In this paper, we demonstrate the results of time-lapse 3D VSP surveys for tracking small quantities of the injected fluid. Data were collected throughout the monitoring program of Stage 2C of the Otway CO2CRC geosequestration project. The outcome of the 3D time-lapse VSP data has shown the capabilities of borehole seismic methodology to track reliably the small amount of the injected carbon dioxide. 3D VSP data were collected within the CO2CRC research program Stage 2C that involves the injection of 15 kt of CO2 in three stages. Monitoring volumes were acquired after the injection of every 5kt and a dataset one year post-injection. VSP revealed an excellent repeatability and demonstrated the ability to track the evolution of the CO2 plume. The study unfolds the high potentials of the borehole seismic in application to the permanent reservoir monitoring.
