Abstract

Summary

We present a short review on the kinematic and structural evolution of Mesozoic rifts of the south eastern North Sea and Northern Germany (Glückstadt Graben, Horn Graben, Central Graben) with a special emphasis on highlighting major similarities and differences. Additionally, we highlight some still open questions, put them up for discussion and formulate some hypotheses based on the regional geological context.

The following open question are discussed: 1.) Uncertainties in the timing and kinematics of the initial phase of the rifts or of their precursors, 2.) The cause of abnormal high subsidence events in the rifts during the Middle Buntsandstein and the Middle Keuper, 3.) The cause for the delay in the activity of major faulting and halotectonics and 4.) The amount of Mesozoic extension and shortening accumulated by the rifts.
