Comparison of Oil Recovery Rate in Water Flooding of Carbonate and Sandstone Reservoirs: Effect of Different Salinities

Abstract
A considerable portion of world’s reservoirs consist of carbonate reservoirs, and the use of low-salt water injection as an EOR process for these reservoirs has a high priority. Likewise, sandstone reservoirs require low-salt water injection to produce more recovery. In this study, the relative core permeability data from a carbonate reservoir and a sandstone reservoir were obtained at different salinity levels of injected water based on the available data in the literature. The simulation results of low-salt water injection indicate high recovery rate of the carbonate reservoir compared to that of the sandstone reservoir. The reason for this difference in oil recovery is the difference in the slope of the relative permeability figures of the carbonate reservoir and the sandstone reservoir. Also, in the output results for the carbonate reservoir, a distinct optimal amount of injected water salinity is observed, but this optimal amount is not seen in the sandstone reservoir.
