Abstract

Summary

The paper focuses on continental deposits of the Tyumen Formation of the Western Siberian oil and gas basin. The main characteristic of these deposits is significant vertical and lateral discontinuity that leads to complicated petroleum fields geometry. Even now in most cases, geological models of Tyumen Formation fields are far from reality: numerous non-existing tectonic and lithological barriers are drawn without paying any attention to seismic data. Resources and reserves evaluation based on such models are usually overestimated and have nothing to do with real geological situation. “Carpet drilling” remains a very popular way of developing Tyumen Formation petroleum fields despite its low efficiency and ignoring geological aspects. The idea of this work is to reveal wrong approaches for geological and geophysical data interpretation of Tyumen Formation interval and to set up approaches and methodology for continental deposits study.
