Abstract

Summary

The source of oils in the Apollonia carbonate reservoir, in the Razzak Field of the Alamein basin, is confusing all the time, which affects further exploration. In order to understand the Apollonia oil source correlation, the paper focused on the genetic semblance between Apollonia oil sample and main source rocks in the western desert of Egypt, to assess the extension of the petroleum system. Results reveal that Jurassic Khatatba and Lower Cretaceous Alam Elbueib– 4 source rocks characterization show good to fair organic richness and its capability to generate oil with amount of gas. While, the source rock of Abu Roash– F Member showed good to fair organic richness with kerogen type (II) and very good genetic potential which reflect its capability to produce oil in the future. Molecular biomarker characterization illustrates that the Apollonia's oil has been charged from source rocks deposited in a terrestrial environment with marine input under oxic – suboxic conditions. Apollonia oil derived from mixed source rocks have the same facies and properties of the Jurassic age, most probably from marine and non-marine shale, and these source rocks are located at depth around 14000’ or below according to maturity profile created from the vitrinite reflectance
