Abstract
In this study, the effect of microwave (MW) on the oil in porous media of calcite, dolomite, and sandstone reservoirs was investigated. For this purpose, oil-aged cores in the Fischer assay developed with MW were exposed to these waves at 2450 MHz frequency and 200 W power in an environment free of oxygen and saturated with helium, for 30 minutes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of porous media indicate that changes in their structure and dispersion in calcite and dolomite rocks are much more noticeable than sandstone samples. Based on energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) results, MW change the amount of sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen (SNO) elements that have high potential for absorbing these waves in the oil sample. This decrease in the amount of non-hydrocarbon polar elements of oil depends on the type of reservoir rock. The average reduction of SNO compounds in sandstone samples is only 4.5%. While the calcite and dolomite samples show a reduction of 15% and 10%, respectively. In sandstone samples, most of the MW absorption occurs due to the presence of water in the montmorillonite minerals and kaolinite. SEM images of sandstone structure also confirm this phenomenon. MW change the structure of sandstone crystals.
