Abstract

Summary

Using multi-beam water column data acquired in 2016, we captured four gas bubble plumes in the Qiongdongnan sea area, northern South China Sea. One of them lies within a previous 3D seismic survey zone, which offers a good opportunity to study the structure beneath the plume. Seismic image reveals a gas chimney structure just beneath the plume. Time slice of 3D seismic data shows the chimney has an oval shape. On the top of the gas chimney, there exists a zone characterized by enhanced amplitude. We interpret this zone as the accumulation of gas hydrates. Our dataset links the water-column observations to the subsurface structure and improves our understanding of cold seep system in this area.
