Abstract

Summary

In this effort, we remove surface-related multiples present in a field shallow water OBC data from the Middle East. For this purpose, we propose applying a new workflow. Its key component is a simplification of the original robust Estimation of Primaries by Sparse Inversion by assuming the subsurface structure being locally space-invariant. In that region, this is usually a good approximation of the underlying geology. Using this approach, the data are processed per CMP gather, independently of each other. This significantly diminishes the memory requirements of the sparse inversion process and makes the process embarrassingly parallelizable via a Message Passing Interface (MPI). We demonstrate that in a typical shallow water dataset from the Middle East, this approach is viable and surface-related multiples are better attenuated compared to conventional approaches.
