Quantitative Experimental Research on the Correlation Between the Kerogen Content and Elastic Properties

Abstract
Kerogen is the most important natural organic matter for hydrocarbon generation, and plays significant role in affecting the elastic properties of shale, however it's difficult to quantitative discriminate and analyse their relationships. Artificial organic rich shale provides effective methodology to accurately quantify kerogen content and investigate its effect on varied elastic properties. Based on the hot-pressing technique, a total of 10 AORS full block samples were manufactured with different weight percentages of kerogen (1.71% to 14.80%) to measure the elastic properties in the elevated confining pressure (CP: 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60MPa). Vp and Vs generally decrease with kerogen content in each step of pressurized procedure, Vp switched to be more sensitive to the CP than those of Vs during the pressure loading process when the CP are greater than 2MPa. SI would be more sensitive to the pressurization and unpressurization, while PI tends to be more sensitive to different pressurized stages. Researches revealed that the crossplot that Vp/Vs ratio versus acoustic impedance (AI) color coded by KC in different confining pressures can distinguish the KC, and the PI-based crossplot may be better than that of SI to estimate the KC.
