Abstract

Summary

We propose to perform seismic imaging using stratigraphic coordinates, a coordinate system that follows the shape of each reflector. We reformulate the wave propagation problem to perform seismic imaging directly in the stratigraphic coordinates by using a modification of Riemannian wave propagation. The benefit of this approach is a closer connection between the output of imaging and reflectivity inversion, including the analysis of reflectivity versus angle. Synthetic data examples verify effectiveness of the proposed approach.
