Abstract

Summary

We developed an equilibrium solubility model to calculate the solubility of gases in a saline aquifer. Empirical correlations from different published sources are used to cover a large range of pressure, temperature, salinity, and gas species encounters in an oil and gas reservoir. The model is validated by comparing its performance against measured experimental data at typical pressure and temperature ranges of an oil and gas reservoir.

Furthermore, a field case study is presented in this manuscript to demonstrate the impact of gas solubility in the aquifer on the operation of an oil field.

The solubility model explains that the observed increase in the producing gas-oil ratio of an oil field is associated to the release of dissolved gases in the aquifer. Hydrogen sulfide is also dissolved in the aquifer and released during oil and gas production. This will cause an increase in the hydrogen sulfide production and consequently, operational challenges in terms of safety and corrosion control. Increase in the production of corrosive and hazardous hydrogen sulfide may lead to the complete shutdown of a production system.
