Abstract

Summary

Understanding multiphase flow of fluids through porous media is an important area of research, due to its significance in enhance oil recovery and the difficulty of characterizing and predicting how fluids flow in a reservoir. A common method to enhance the recovery of oil is the injection of water. The injected water acts as the the displacing fluid while oil is the displaced fluid. Such displacement can either be stable or unstable. Given that water is less viscous than oil, as water penetrates into oil, long “fingers” could be are stimulated. The evolution of such instabilities and patterns between the interface of the two fluids results in an unstable displacement. Such phenomenon is known as viscous fingering. In this study viscous fingering was numerically simulated to understand its relationship with wettability and heterogeneity
