Abstract

Summary

Modern PSDM processed broadband seismic data reveal detailed Zechstein salt structures and Triassic minibasin geometries under previously unrecognized Permian Zechstein salt overhangs on the Jæren High, Norwegian North Sea. The salt canopies cover sizeable areas of Triassic and tentative mapping suggests subsalt structural trapping potential. Internal structural geometry of the Triassic sediment sections in the minibasins record the salt movement and show evidence of associated tilting and compression of the Triassic. Internal structures in the salt are imaged and suggest presence of Zechstein stringers. Data quality allows the detection of salt welds particularly along fault zones, indicating migration pathways for hydrocarbons potentially generated in deeply buried, pre-Rotliegend sections. Seismic character of the pre-Rotliegend indicates presence of sediments, which may contain source rocks reported from other parts of the North Sea.
