Abstract

Summary

Geothermal energy is one of the key natural resources providing sustainable efficiency. However, there is no offshore geothermal field discovered or producing so far in the World. The advancing technology makes the exploitation of offshore geothermal resources necessary and turns them into feasible projects. Based on this assumption, this study aims to introduce the Gulf of Candarli as one of the potential offshore geothermal field candidates. Being the offshore extent of the Western Anatolian grabens that include numerous onshore geothermal fields, the Eastern Aegean Sea provides a unique and promising target for offshore geothermal exploration projects. However, the geological features and the pressure-temperature conditions of the region has not been broadly understood. Therefore, benefits of seismic reflection method and 3D petrophysical modeling have been used to identify the pressure-temperature conditions, crucial for the well planning. Reflected pore pressure and static temperature cubes have revealed that significant anomalies correspond to major heat sources defined as extinct volcanoes and lava flows. Temperature profiles and geothermal gradient values indicate that the Gulf of Candarli can be classified as a low to medium temperature, theoretical geothermal field requiring further analysis to be producible.
