Abstract

Summary

The metropolitan area of Murcia is located in an area of moderate seismic hazard in SE Spain. It is one of the areas with the highest seismicity in this country. The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), a non-invasive seismic method, well-suited for urban exploration, has been used in this work to characterize the shallow sediments in this urban area. The seismic source was a sledge hammer. Through the combination of active and passive forms, results show a depth around 40 meters and subsurface materials were classified in terms of Eurocode-8 soil types to facilitate the implementation of these results in seismic hazard studies.
